Back in the days in November 2016, Karun Nair became only the second Indian to score a triple-century in Test Match Cricket. He did so against England at Mohali and even though he failed before and after, England would certainly remember what Nair could do and many felt that the southpaw from Karnataka should have been in the XI instead of Hanuma Vihari.
Despite the fact that almost all Indian batsmen barring Virat Kohli failed, it was expected that both Prithvi Shaw and Karun Nair will find a place but instead came in Hanuma Vihari, which came in as a shocker for many cricketing pundits across the globe. Just for the record, Hanuma Vihari was the 5th highest run scorer in the Ranji Trophy last season and that could have played a major factor for Kohli to believe in him more than the rest.
While Sunil Gavaskar recently questioned Virat Kohli’s tactics, the latest to join the wagon-wheel was the ace off-spinner from India, Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan who is also a part of the media team quoted on air that, ” “I am a bit surprised to see Hanuma Vihari play ahead of Karun Nair, who has been a part of the team from the first match itself and didn’t get to play a game. Nair has been on the tour from the beginning, hasn’t got a game, but the new guy comes into the team from the fourth Test and straightaway gets to play,”.
The off-spinner certainly seemed quite upset with Virat Kohli’s decision and it would be interesting to see if the young Vihari could justify the faith Virat Kohli has shown towards him. We would love to know your opinion on this one though. Do you think captain Kohli made the right move by playing Hanuma Vihari instead of a Nair or a Prithvi Shaw?
