Ganguly insisted on picking Anil Kumble for the 2004 tour of Australia despite the selectors preferring Murali Kartik. Kumble went on to become the highest Indian wicket-taker of the series:
This was another epic decision by the man and another known dressing room story. Dada went against selectors to pick Kumble, even though he was warned by the selectors to play Murali Kartik instead.
As fearless as he is, Kumble was finally picked and he emerged as the highest wicket-taker, with 24 wickets. Ganguly took the risk even though the selectors said that they would remove him from captaincy if Kumble fails.
